Health and Wellness

Health and wellness is the complete integration of body, mind and spirit. India–being the wellness capital, treatments are mostly rooted in the thousands of years old traditional Unani ethos which are complemented by intense healing therapies.
Unani is unique in itself and has reliable effects, unlike the divided approach of modern medicine it does not distinguish between preventative and curative aspects of health. While allopathic medicine tends to focus on the management of disease, Unani provides us with the knowledge of how to prevent disease and how to eradicate its root cause. The Unani System of Medicine diagnoses and treats the patient as a whole looking into their overall physical, mental and spiritual aspects.

UNANI IN INDIA

Unani is an ancient, one of the most revered and trusted branch of medicine and healing, through a tradition handed down from the sages 5000 thousand years ago. It is an ancient system of lifestyle, diet and medicine used by the majority of Indians, and competing with pharmaceutical methods on an equal basis in India even today. Unani Hakeems (Physicians) in India succeeded in retaining its traditional strength and also benefitting from contemporary scientific development over the years.

In the Unani System of Medicine, India has emerged as the world leader with its widest network of well-developed quality educational institutions, comprehensive healthcare facilities, state-of-the-art research and quality drug manufacturing industries.

THE THEORY OF UNANI

Unani Tibb is based on the Humoral Theory. This theory supposes the presence of four Humours (Akhlat) in the body – Blood (Dam), Phlegm (Balgham), Yellow Bile (Safra) and Black Bile (Sauda). The Temperament (Mizaj) of a person is accordingly expressed by the words Sanguine (Damawi), Phlegmatic (Balghame), Choloric (Safrawi) and Melancholic (Sawdawi), according to the preponderance in him/her, respectively, of the above humours. The humours are assigned temperaments. Blood is hot and moist, Phlegm is cold and moist, Yellow Bile is hot and dry, and Black Bile is cold and dry.

Every person is supposed to have a unique humoral constitution, which represents his healthy state. Any change in this brings about a change in the state of health. A power of self-preservation or adjustment, “Medicarix Naturae” (Tabiat Mudabbira-i Badan), is formulated, which strives to restore any disturbance within the limits prescribed by the constitution of an individual.

The human body is considered to be made up of the following seven components (Umore Tabaiya) each having a close relation to and direct bearing on the state of health of an individual and it is therefore necessary for a Unani physician to take all these factors of the human entity into consideration for arriving at a correct diagnosis and deciding the line of treatment.

ELEMENTS (ARKAN)

The human body consists of four elements, viz., air, fire, water and earth. These elements actually symbolize the four states of matter. They have their own temperaments. Air: hot and moist; Water: cold and moist; Earth: cold and dry; and Fire: hot and dry.

Temperament (Mizaj)

The interaction of the elements produces various states, which in their turn determine the temperament of an individual, and it is of paramount importance to keep the temperament of an individual in mind while prescribing a course of treatment.

Humors (Aklat)

These are the fluids which the human body obtains from food, and include various hormones and enzymes.

Organs (Aaza)

There are four organs of primary importance in Unani medicine. These are the brain, the heart, the liver, and the testicles or the ovaries.

Spirits (Arwah)

These are considered to be the life force and are therefore given importance in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. They are defined as carriers of different powers.

Faculties (Quwa)

The faculties are of three kinds
Quvat e tabaiya: Natural power, the power of metabolism and reproduction
Psychic power: Nervous and psychic power
Vital power: Power that maintains life and enables all the organs to accept the effect of psychic power
Functions (Afal): This includes the movement and functions of the various organs of the body

PRINCIPLES OF DIAGNOSIS

In Unani Tibb, great reliance is placed on investigating the cause of the disease thoroughly for proper diagnosis.

The Pulse (Nabz), Urine (Baul) and Stool (Baraz)
are employed as the general indications to diagnose the various states of the body

The Unani system considers that food and drinks taken as nutrients constitute the building material of the body, including the humours
